Network giant Cisco has its eyes cast on SMB networking, with the unveiling of the Cisco 100 series unmanaged switch designed for small and mid-sized businesses. The Cisco 100 series replaces the previous SD and SR switches, and comes with a number of enhancements where power management is concerned.

Speaking to internetnews.com, Mark Monday, Cisco’s vice president and general manager of small-business solutions, confirmed that the new series is designed to be entry-level devices for Cisco’s networking portfolio. Monday said of the series:

It’s really focused on the customer that doesn’t want to bother with trying to do any configuration.

Cisco officials say that the 100 Series switches are only the first of a lineup that the company has planned for SMBs.

As a value offering, the Cisco 100 Series will use the open source Linux operating system instead of Cisco’s proprietary IOS operating system, which is typically reserved for the company’s high-end enterprise devices. With models sporting between eight to 24 Ethernet ports, the new switches come in desktop and rack-mount form factors, and in flavors of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit transfer rates. For SMBs with more specialized needs, there is also an 8-port 10/100 model with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities.

The new switches also have been designed to minimize energy consumption. The Cisco 100 will put unused ports into sleep mode in the absence of any attached devices, or if they are turned off; the ports are automatically enabled when the link is re-established. To meet the cable’s optimal power requirements, the new series of switches tweaks its power output according to the length of connected cables.

On the wireless front, Cisco has launched the RV 120W Wireless-N VPN Firewall, which was designed for smaller businesses or branch offices with 20 or fewer employees. The 802.11n access point comes with a four-port switch, and as its name suggests, comes with a built-in firewall and related security functions, as well as support for IPsec VPN. In addition, guest users are supported and can connect to the RV 120W with secure access.

Because 70 percent of Canonical’s services revenue comes from the server side of its Ubuntu business, the company behind the popular Linux distro plans to beef up its server software, Computerworld reports.

Ubuntu is well-liked enough among its desktop users — my boss being one of the newest — that Dell chose to preinstall it on certain desktops and laptops offered in the U.S. But, speaking at Ubuntu Live, founder Mark Shuttleworth explained that the company will increase its investment in the server version in an effort to catch the collective eye of IT teams.

Web-based systems management and monitoring software, Landscape, will be launched in beta next month, Shuttleworth said, and the company plans to implement “regular and predictable” software releases for the enterprise. Its enterprise service agreements will also be expanded to France and Germany.

HP’s announcement that it plans to support the Debian Linux distro for some of its server products

Posted by Ken Hardin

HP’s announcement that it plans to support the Debian Linux distro for some of its server products reflects what may be a growing trend of hardware vendors bypassing Linux OS partners and just handling support themselves.

Unlike Red Hat, which makes its money from support and maintenance, and SuSE, with its close ties to the Novell product stack, Debian is pretty much a community-supported Linux flavor in the wild. It and its close cousin Ubuntu have won over many of the hard-core Linux set (who like to do their own support, thank you very much), as well as taking the forefront in speculated projects by mega-vendors such as Oracle and Google.

In its announcement of Debian support, HP noted that its own staff handles 99 percent of software support requests without having to pass customers through to various software partners.

As Linux more firmly establishes itself in the server room, particularly on commodity boxes like HP’s Proliant line, the OS may well increasingly be seen as a transparent service offered by the hardware vendor — not as a Windows-esque add-on with all the additional support hassle that can sometimes create.

10 Tips For Speeding Up Your Site

.1 Move Your DNS To The Cloud

Troy said this may

Posted by Ken Hardin

10 Tips For Speeding Up Your Site

.1 Move Your DNS To The Cloud

Troy said this may well have been the single biggest step we took to improve our site performance metrics. By moving to a DNS provider with servers across the globe, our users no longer need to make calls all the way back to the main hosting center in the central United States to figure out exactly where they are headed. That initial call is localized now, and hence quite a bit quicker.

.2 Cache Your CSS and JavaScript

We dug a little deeper into the default settings on the Web servers and found that we were quickly expiring the CSS being served to client browsers via a page header value, thus making repeat visitors request it again and again. (We, like most publishing sites, have a fairly substantial CSS.)

.3 cache Your Images

This tactic falls in the same category as caching JavaScript and CSS: Make sure client browsers are not being told they need to download the same images time and time again every time they engage in a session with your Web site. We’re making special note of it here because of a simple trick that is also applicable to those cached assets, but seems more germane to images: Many sites have adopted a habit of making slight changes to names of image files (as well as the calls to them, obviously) to force browsers to re-download them, in case someone typo-prone is doing the artwork and qualitative fixes need to be made. Same with CSS updates, but those are seldom as frequent or glaring, unless you’ve done some major page reconstruction. Oh, and be sure your Web servers all have the same expiration settings.

.4 Serve Assets From Multiple Domains

Browsers tend to make concurrent calls for assets, like images and stylesheets, more effectively if they can do so to multiple domains. There’s the risk that one of the domains might fail, of course, but the Internet is a wild and wooly kind of a place. In addition to employing a dedicated image server (if you aren’t already doing that, then you have a little groundwork to do before you start seriously considering page load optimization), we plan to move our cached assets to servers that do not write cookies, which can be resource- (and hence, time-) intensive.

.5 Put ADS in i frames

If your site serves advertisements – or any other asset that might need to bounce between multiple third-party systems for fulfillment – it’s probably a good idea to put those calls into iFrames. This tactic is more human-facing than anything else, and might not register with benchmarking agents. Steve noted: “When we see heavy ads, Google tells us we have heavy pages.” The main effect is that it allows all the leading browsers to go ahead and assemble and display other page elements that you control more discretely as any vagrant ad calls go bouncing around the Internet.

.6 Use Gzip Compression

We accomplished this at the load-balancer level (“Let the server do what the server does well,” Troy said), but numerous current hardware and virtually all contemporary browsers support the GZIP compression scheme, which can smash data in transit by more than 50 percent.

.7 Make sure your backbone is solid

OK, it’s obvious, but data flows over your network first, so make sure the connections are hot. We went full gigabit between the database and web/app server – it made a big difference.

.8 Run a basic hygiene cheek again

Steve used a NSFW expletive to describe how most webmasters would react to this little piece of advice, but do it anyway. We found a few third-party widgets that simply weren’t doing anybody any good, and now they are gone. We’ve also found a few things tied into proprietary code that we can’t tweak right now, but we know they are there at least. Nothing’s perfect – know your flaws.

.9 Take a Hard Look at your images

We evaluated our image specs and settled on PNG-8 at 256 colors. If you are running the most beautiful Web site in the world, you may need really fat JPEGs. Otherwise, smash those things in Photoshop. They are a huge chunk of the data your servers are passing. A little optimization here can go a long way.

.10 minify your code

We haven’t done this just yet, but plans are afoot to minify our CSS and Javascript. The process, supported by numerous open source tools, removes unnecessary white space and comments, combines multiple CSS or Javascript files, and serves them with GZIP encoding. Google has been at the forefront of minification. Steve noted that a couple years ago, you could view source on a Google property and make perfect sense of the Javascript with just a glance; now, it’s so compressed as to be mostly undecipherable to humans. And smaller is better, when it comes to page load speed.

So what do we need on our computers to protect our data? Thompson says the best way to set up computer security is through layering. Even if one area of protection is only 75 percent effective, the increasing layers will close all the holes. Those layers should include the following:

Firewalls. Firewalls protect the computer from outside intruders. According to Microsoft, there are multiple options for firewall: hardware, software and wireless router firewalls.

A traditional scanner, such as antivirus, antimalware, and antispyware software. This protects computers from viruses, Trojans, worms, rootkits and similar attacks. Today, these programs are usually bundled into one. Because there are thousands of malware variants released daily, it is hard for the software companies to keep up. A lot of users feel safer with multiple scanner programs, finding that what one program may miss, another may catch.

A specialized Web-scanning layer to block most of the attacks immediately. The Web application scanner tests Web servers for dangerous files and other problems.

A behavior-monitoring layer. According to Thompson, a behavior monitor watches for malicious behavior. For example, a new program that installs itself so that it survives a reboot, and also starts monitoring keystrokes, is very suspicious to a behavior monitor.

Newest version of your favorite browser. IE8 might not be perfect, but it is a lot safer than IE6, which is still the browser of choice on many computer systems.

Network-based restrictions and user management software. One infected computer can destroy the network, so better safe than sorry when it comes to the Web sites your employees can visit while on the conpany’s server.

Data encryption software. Keep your data safe by encrypting it.

Online backup system. This gives you access to your data in case of theft or computer malfunctions.
DSphinx Backup Software

There used to be a time when secure email management was simple. “Managing” meant sorting through your email messages, putting them into appropriate folders. Secure email back them meant using a simple password for email access. However, today, with email being a business critical application, more threats against email than ever before, government regulatory concerns, secure email management takes on a whole different meaning. Viruses, spam, worms, and other malicious attacks and non-malicious events can bring email infrastructures to their knees. With recent government legislation in countries such as the U.S., email confidentiality has become a growing concern. One of the more common access to email today is via web browser and web based email access. What security issues should be kept in mind when developing or designing web mail systems?

This paper will show how to use basic Linux scripting to create a reusable network security monitor that is easy to use and easy to maintain. The purpose of this exercise is introduced with suggestions where it might be useful. Linux commands are discussed, along with techniques to automate them and interpret their results. Methods for turning these scripts into a generic, reusable tool that is easy to maintain are demonstrated, along with further suggestions for enhancing this tool. Various examples are given to show how these techniques can be applied to various security requirements. The full script including all the examples and the complete output are given at the end of the paper, along with a list of references. This should be enough information for security professionals to start creating their own generic reusable Linux scripts within their own collection of personal tools.

As more and more attacks are being carried out over the HTTP layer there is a growing need to push the envelope and bring Web security to new levels. Most existing tools work on the TCP/IP level, failing to use the specifics of the HTTP protocol in their operation. The need for increased security has lead to the creation of application gateways, tools that are essentially reverse proxies with the added capability of protocol analysis. Many commercial solutions are available. This article will demonstrate how you can build your own application gateway with little effort, using open source components that are widely available.
